A GIM seminar was organized by UNDP on March 4, 2010, in Bogota, Colombia, with the double objective to promote the implementation of inclusive markets initiatives in Latin America & the Caribbean, both at the regional and national levels, through capacity building in the identification, design and implementation of inclusive markets projects; and establish a regional network of GIM experts, practitioners and stakeholders, as well as laying out a vision for inclusive markets in the region.

Over 100 participants from local government entities, large national companies, civil society organizations and academic institutions were present, as well as representatives from 20 UNDP Country Offices. The seminar was opened by a keynote speech from the President of the Colombian Stock Exchange, Mr. Juan Pablo Córdoba Garcés. Presentations were then made by multilateral and bilateral institutions (UNDP, World Bank, AECID), private and public sector companies (Indupalma, Empresa Pública de Medellin), business associations (CECODES, Federação das Industrias do Estado do Parana), civil society organizations (Avina, Ashoka, Swisscontact, Amichocó, Fundação Getúlio Vargas), consultancy companies (Dalberg), academia (Social Enterprise Knowledge Network, GIM Research Fellow), and low-income communities (Asocasan).

The agenda covered issues ranging from corporate social responsibility to social entrepreneurship, inclusive business models, international and regional experiences in the area of inclusive markets, as well as concrete case studies of inclusive business models from the region. Several issues were raised during the discussions, including the need to: strengthen public policy, public institutions and the role of the State; share experiences through South-South cooperation; foster partnerships and a regional GIM network; and build the required capacity for scalable and sustainable initiatives.

This network will keep being nurtured through follow-up activities, such as a potential regional GIM report, and a web-based platform. Short videos of some of the event speakers will be uploaded shortly… stay tuned!
